First, using green materials saves money on energy and water costs. “Experts report that businesses that pay the initial 2 percent increase for green materials as opposed to traditional building materials (on average) will recoup this initial outlay by as much as six to seven times,” he writes.
Second the federal, state and local governments offer rebates, tax credits and other financial incentives for building green. The US Department of Energy’s DSIRE database lists all the government incentives and programs organized by state.
Third, sustainable building materials save money in maintenance and repair. And by choosing bamboo instead of hard wood, for example, businesses don’t have to sacrifice durability or style by using green building materials.
A facility in Seattle, built to meet the city’s green building certification program, was allowed to bend the local building codes to get its sustainable initiatives to work and be viable, according to a Sourceable article published earlier this month.
